About Barnett Ellice

Barnett was born in Broome around 1898. His father Henry was stationed in Broome as a police officer. The family remained in Broome until 1902.

War Service

Barnett enlisted for the AIF in May 1916, when he was 18 years and 3 months old. His older brother was already serving in the 11th Battalion and his letter of consent from his parents states that Barnett was anxious to join him there. Barnett was assigned to the 27th Battalion, 16th Reinforcements and after some signal training, he embarked from Fremantle aboard the Port Melbourne in October, and arrived in Davenport in December 1916. Barnett was transferred to the 11th Battalion in February, which was the same battalion his brother and father were serving in. After contracting mumps which involved a short stay in hospital, Barnett was marched out to join his unit in Etaples in May 1917. He was wounded in action in September, when he received gun shot wounds to the hand and head and later died from those wounds. His father was able to be with him in his final moments.
