Capt. A. W. Gull writes from the Jordan an interesting letter to his pal (Capt. Jim Tolmer, Broome). Inter alia, he says ‘They are (there) near the jaws of hell, and the old camel corps has had a lot of nice things said about them lately for their share in the scraps. It is a hell of a country, and sounds a bit better in the bible than it is in reality. Have ‘done’ Jerusalem and all places of note, but they mostly resemble Cairo in the vicinity of the ‘Wazza.’ There are millions of flies there and malaria is plentiful. Would much like to be with you on some of your droving trips, and hit a pub together at the end of a hot, dusty day. Chin-chin to all old Broomeites.’Letter from Arthur Pompey Gull, published in the North West Echo 10th August 1918
