William grew up in Perth and attended the local state school.<\/p>\n<h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1020 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/broomeanzacs.broomemuseum.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/william-telford-and-wife-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"http:\/\/broomeanzacs.broomemuseum.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/william-telford-and-wife-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/broomeanzacs.broomemuseum.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/william-telford-and-wife-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/broomeanzacs.broomemuseum.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/william-telford-and-wife-180x240.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Broome Connection<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Bill was apprenticed to a Captain Francis, a Broome pearler when he was 18 years old. He eventually went into partnership with George Francis. Bill was in Broome during the outbreak of war, his attestation papers were signed by the Mayor of Broome, W. Clarke-Hall and his medical performed by Broome medical officer Alex Goldstein. George met his fianc\u00e9e Flossie in Broome, and the couple married before Bill was posted overseas.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">War Service<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">After enlisting in Broome, Bill travelled to Perth to complete his enlistment and Blackboy Hill Camp. He was assigned to the 11th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement. After training in Perth the unit embarked from Fremantle aboard the HMAT <em>Itonus A50 <\/em>on 22nd February 1915.
