His father was a storekeeper at the Royal Navy College in Greenwich. Alfred was the youngest of seven ,children, who all grew up in the Greenwich area. In 1911 Alfred was living at home with his parents and siblings and working as a bank clerk. They embarked from Fremantle aboard the<em> Anchises<\/em> in September 1915 and were taken on strength in Helipolis in February, 1916 then immediately marched out to Serapeum. The unit remained in Palestine, where Alfred was wounded in action by a gun shot wound to the head.
