The family moved to Western Australia when he was young and Frederick attended Beaconsfield &amp; Claremont state schools. Frederick trained as an accountant until he was 19 years old, and then went to sea for five years. He was assigned to the 10th Light Horse Regiment, Headquarters and embarked with the unit aboard the <em>Masobra <\/em>in February 1915. As horses were considered unsuitable for work in Gallipoli the troops were used as infantry. Frederick joined the regiment in Gallipoli just two days before the ill fated charge at the Nek where most of the Regiment was either killed or wounded.
