Herbert was born in Adelaide, to Edward and Rachael Fyfe. The family moved to Western Australia when Bert was young and he attended school in James Street, Perth.<\/p>\n
Herbert was listed as a civil servant in the Electoral Roll from 1914-1917 and a postal assistant from 1915-1917 in the Wise Directory. Herbert was living in Broome when he enlisted and his medical was performed in Broome by Dr. Harada.<\/p>\n
Bert enlisted for the AIF in July 1916 and was assigned to the 11th Battalion, 22nd Reinforcement. The unit embarked per the Argyllshire<\/em> on the 9th November from Fremantle, and disembarked at Davenport in January 1917.<\/p>\n From there he was taken on strength and posted to the C Company of the 11th Battalion.
