Herbert Ernest Reynolds was born about 1895 in Upper Norwood in Surrey, England. He was the middle child of Herbert, a builder and Edith. Herbert attended Sunny Hill school and at the age of 16 Herbert began his training to be an engineer at Wingfield Motor Company in Upper Norwood.<\/p>\n
Herbert first appeared in Broome around 1915 when he was listed as an engineer on the electoral roll, he worked for Heinke & Co who provided diving equipment for the pearling industry. Herbert enlisted for the AIF in Broome, his attestation paper was signed by Broome’s mayor, W. Clarke-Hall and his medical examination was performed by Dr, Harada.<\/p>\n
Herbert completed his enlistment at Blackboy Hill Camp and was posted to the 11th Battalion, 14th Reinforcements. He embarked for Egypt per the Miltiades<\/em> in February 1916. By May he had joined his battalion which had been deployed to the Western Front in France and was posted to “B Company”. In July the battalion moved to the Somme and were committed to fighting around Pozieres.
